Commitment of Eco-First

Overview of the Eco-First System

The "Eco-First System" was created by the Ministry of the Environment in April 2008. This system involves companies promising the Minister of the Environment to conduct environmental conservation initiatives such as global warming countermeasures, waste and recycling measures, and the Minister of the Environment certifies that those companies are conducting advanced and unique business activities that lead the industry in the field of the environment.

About The Eco-First Program

The "Eco-First Promise" of Kumagai Gumi

Kumagai Gumi was first certified as an "Eco-First company" in the construction industry in June, 2010.
We strive to fulfill our societal responsibilities as a company in the construction business via six initiatives for achieving a sustainable society, such as identifying the environmental impact that can occur via our business and preventing it where possible. We've updated The "Eco-First Promise" January 2026 for the fourth time.

1.We aim to achieve carbon neutrality (net-zero greenhouse gas emissions) by 2050.

  • We will work to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across our entire value chain. Our targets are to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 42% and Scope 3 emissions by 25% by 2030, compared to fiscal year 2020 levels. Ultimately, we aim to achieve carbon neutrality across Scopes 1, 2, and 3 by 2050.
  • We will maintain our SBT (Science Based Targets) certification and continue our participation in RE100.
  • We will transition to 100% renewable energy for the electricity used in our business activities by 2050.
  • In our construction operations, we will reduce CO2 emissions by utilizing renewable energy, adopting biofuels, and promoting fuel-efficient driving for construction machinery and vehicles.
  • We will reduce CO2 emissions throughout the entire life cycle of our design-build projects by implementing ZEB (Net Zero Energy Building) standards and advanced energy-saving technologies
  • We aim to achieve significant CO2 reductions by expanding our strategic initiatives in mass timber construction, renewable energy development, and forest preservation.
  • As natural disasters intensify due to climate change, we will contribute to national resilience by utilizing advanced technologies such as unmanned construction.
Carbon Neutral

2.We will promote the transition to a circular economy.

  • We will strive to promote the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) throughout the stages of design, procurement, and construction, as well as in the use of office supplies.
  • We aim to achieve a 100% recycling and recovery rate for specified construction material waste and zero landfill waste from our construction sites. To this end, we will strengthen waste segregation and maintain a mixed construction waste discharge rate (*) of 2.0% or less.
(*)Mixed construction waste discharge rate (%) = Amount of mixed construction waste discharged (t) / Total amount of construction waste discharged (t)
  • At our construction sites, we will implement proprietary sorting procedures for plastic waste and ensure their proper management, aiming to recycle 60% of plastic waste by 2030.
  • To ensure transparency in waste management, we aim to sustain an electronic manifest adoption rate of 95% for all outsourced industrial waste disposal.
  • When purchasing construction materials and office supplies, we will select eco-friendly products whenever possible.
Promoting a Circular Economy

3.We will contribute to the realization of a "Nature Positive" world (halting and reversing biodiversity loss).

  • We have identified the realization of Nature Positive as a priority issue (materiality) for our company and will strive to preserve the natural environment.
  • In addition to complying with relevant laws and regulations, we will proactively engage in biodiversity-conscious design, construction, and technological development.
  • When carrying out construction, we evaluate our impact on ecosystems and act with due consideration for the conservation of biodiversity and the sustainable use of natural resources.
  • We will assess the risks of water pollution from construction wastewater and ground improvement works, and implement necessary measures to prevent environmental accidents.
  • We will analyze the risks and opportunities that the natural environment presents to our business activities and integrate these findings into our management strategies. Furthermore, we express our support for the TNFD recommendations and will work to enhance our information disclosure.
Coexist with nature

4.We will strive to develop, improve, and promote the widespread adoption of eco-friendly technologies.

  • We will intensify our research efforts toward achieving carbon neutrality and proactively work to develop and promote the adoption of new technologies.
  • We will strive to develop, improve, and promote technologies that contribute to a "Nature Positive" world, such as the Nekko-Chip method (a soil-recycling and revegetation technique), Hotaru (firefly) biotopes, and biotope vegetation management.
Protect the Environment

5.We will ensure the effective operation and continuous improvement of our Environmental Management System (EMS).

  • We will operate our Environmental Management System (EMS) effectively and strive to assess, prevent, and mitigate environmental risks.
  • We will assess and review our Environmental Management System (EMS) as appropriate and strive for its continuous improvement.

6.We will proactively participate in environmental conservation activities within local communities.

  • We will utilize the "Kumagai Gumi Smile Project," a unique framework established for social contribution, to proactively participate in environmental conservation activities within local communities.
  • We will support educational programs that help children, the leaders of the next generation, learn how to build a sustainable society.

7.We will proactively disclose environmental information and work in collaboration with our stakeholders to address environmental challenges.

  • We will proactively disclose our environmental performance, the details of our initiatives, and the status of our progress.
  • We will disclose information regarding our environmental initiatives through our responses to the CDP.
  • We will enhance engagement by proactively initiating dialogue with a diverse range of stakeholders, including investors, customers, and those across our value chain, to work collaboratively in solving environmental issues.
  • We have joined the "Decokatsu" declaration and will encourage behavioral changes among our stakeholders by participating in the "Decokatsu Supporters" (Public-Private Council for the New National Movement toward Decarbonized Lifestyles).
